What is Hernia Surgery?

Few hernias can be unbearably painful and may need treatment through medications or surgical procedures. Acts such as laughing, crying, coughing, straining during a bowel movement, or physical activity can bring back the very painful lump/hernia. At times, hernias may develop serious problems, in such cases, physicians often recommend Hernia surgery.

The most common types of hernia are:

  • Inguinal hernia: The Inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Men are more susceptible compared to women, and very often, surgery may be the only way to fix it.
  • Femoral hernia: The hernia occurs when tissue bulges from the lower belly into the upper thigh, just below the groin crease. Women are more likely than men to suffer from a femoral hernia. Surgical repair is advised for Moderate to Large femoral hernias when they cause high levels of discomfort.
  • Umbilical hernia: An umbilical hernia occurs when intestine, fat, or fluid pushes through a weak spot in the abdomen, causing a bulge near the belly button. These hernias are most common in infants and typically harmless.
  • Incisional hernia: An incisional hernia is a protrusion of tissue formed at the site of a surgical scar. Incisional hernias account for 15-20 percent of all abdominal hernias. Strenuous physical activities after surgery, being overweight, and pregnancy are some risk factors. These hernias do not heal on their own and require surgical treatment to repair.
  • Epigastric hernia: Occurs when fat pushes through a weak part of the abdominal wall. Very often, develop in the middle of the abdomen and is small in size. People may get more than one such hernias at a time requiring surgical interventions.
  • Hiatal hernia: This is a unique hernia, involving the stomach instead of the intestine. It occurs when your stomach bulges up into your chest through an opening in your diaphragm, the muscle that separates the two areas. Patients can’t feel a hiatal hernia or see a bulge. Hiatus hernias rarely cause complications, but they can be fatal.

Why would someone need Hernia Surgery?

Hernia surgery may not be needed immediately for some people whose hernia is small, doesn’t grow, doesn’t cause any pain or other problems. However, it is essential to realize that most hernias may become larger when neglected and become serious with threatening complications, such as strangulation. In strangulation, the bulging tissue is compressed by the muscle wall leading to a shortage in blood supply and the tissue begins to die. Such cases become a medical emergency. Hence, warning signs need immediate medical intervention/surgical treatments to avoid such snags.

Symptoms include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • High fever
  • Intense pain
  • A lump/bulge (Hernia) – red/purple

Different types of Hernia Surgeries:

Your physician will mention the best treatment to address your hernia and may refer you to a surgeon if necessary. When the surgeon thinks it is indispensable to repair your hernia, he will adopt a method of surgery that best meets your needs.

Types of Hernia surgery are:

  • Open surgery: The surgeon will make an incision (10-12cm) at the location of the hernia in your body. The bulging tissue (lump) is set back in place and the weakened muscle wall is sutured. Sometimes, a synthetic mesh is fixed in the area to provide extra support. Recovery time is about 4 to 5 weeks.
  • Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) hernia repair: The surgeon makes small incisions (< 1cm) in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope. The laparoscope sends clear images and then the abdomen is also inflated with a safe gas to create space for the surgeon to view. The peritoneum (the inner lining of the abdomen) is cut to assess the weakness in the abdominal wall. Synthetic mesh is placed to cover the defects or support the abdominal wall. After the procedure is completed, the small incisions are closed with a stitch or two using surgical tape. Recovery time is about 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Robotic Hernia Repair: Like laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery uses a laparoscope, and makes small incisions. However, the surgeon is seated at a console in the operating room and handles the surgical instruments from the console. It can be performed on smaller hernias also and used to rebuild the abdominal wall.

Some of the Tests and Diagnosis:

  • A physical exam
  • Ultrasound
  • Abdominal X-rays
  • Blood work
  • Chest x-ray and an EKG
